How to Cope with the Loss of a Pet
We don’t grieve only when we lose someone we love — we grieve when we lose a four-legged friend who gave us love so freely.
It is incredibly hard to come to terms with such a loss. From time to time, waves of sorrow and grief overwhelm us completely. We don’t want to — and sometimes simply can’t — believe that Rex’s cold, wet nose or Kitty’s soft, fluffy paw will never touch us again, that we will never see Fluffy’s tail wag or hear Sunny sing.
Our friends and relatives who don’t have pets, or don’t see them as members of the family, often don’t understand us. To them, it’s just an animal. To us — it’s a FRIEND.
A FRIEND who always understood.
A FRIEND who remained faithful in our darkest moments.
A FRIEND who could never betray you and loved you exactly as you are.
A FRIEND not so easy to find in the human world.
Animals have much shorter lifespans than humans. I once heard a story about a family who bought a turtle when their son was born — a turtle that can live for more than a hundred years. Yet even it does not live forever.
With time, when the pain and longing begin to fade, only warm memories remain. You find yourself smiling as you recall the funny moments, little habits, and quirks of your beloved companion. But that will come later…
Don’t be afraid to let your emotions flow. Crying over loss and pain is natural. The first days are the hardest, especially when your thoughts return again and again to the final days of your friend’s life.
Try to remember them with love and tenderness, and share those memories with others. Remember: you are not alone in this.
Share your story — about the life you shared with your beloved companion, and about the moment they crossed into another world. You can do this on your social media or on our website. A photo of your pet, a story about them, words of gratitude for the time you spent together, and words of farewell can help you through these difficult days and preserve their memory forever.
If you feel ready and have the strength, share your experience with others.
